What does an anti-reflective coating do?

An anti-reflective (AR) coating on sunglasses is applied to the back surface of the lens, where it stops light entering from behind and beside you bouncing off the inner lens straight into your eye - the flicker you notice driving with low sun over your shoulder. Combined with polarisation, which cuts glare reflecting off roads and water in front of you, backside AR gives the cleanest optical picture available in a sunglass lens. Premium brands like Maui Jim and Serengeti apply it as standard.
