Sunglass Care

We know that your favourite pair of sunnies can become a big part of people’s lives which makes them susceptible to wear and tear. We suggest regular maintenance to ensure lenses and temples remain secure. This service is provided free of charge at any of the BrightEyes stores across Australia. Check out our tips on how you can best care for your sunglasses to keep them in good condition.

There are a few ways that you can best care for your sunglasses. We recommend taking them off with both hands to keep them in shape and never putting them face down to avoid scratching the lenses. It is also best to avoid wearing them on your head to help keep them in shape.

You should also check them regularly for loose screws and tighten them with a small screwdriver whenever necessary. Keeping a care kit is also recommended so that you can easily clean your sunglasses when needed. This kit should include a cloth, lens solution and screwdriver.

We recommend carrying your sunglasses in a sturdy case when not in use. If you are not able to put them in a case, we recommend putting them somewhere they won’t get scratched or crushed.

It is best to use a gentle lens solution to clean your sunglass lenses. Never wipe the lenses when they are dry in order to avoid scratches as there may be dust particles. We also recommend not wiping your glasses with rough materials such as paper towels as this can cause scratches as well. Be extra careful when cleaning prescription sunglasses as these lenses can be more delicate than non-prescription lenses.

Here are the steps we recommend:

  1. Wash dust and grit from your lenses under cold running water.
  2. Dry with a microfibre cloth. Do not clean with a tissue.
  3. Allowing salt or chlorinated water to dry on your sunglasses can cause corrosion to metal parts and may cause the lenses to be scratched if wiped with a dry cloth.
  4. Do not leave your sunglasses on the dashboard or console of your car as distortion and damage may occur to frames and lenses from excessive heat.
  5. To avoid hinge and screw damage, remove sunglasses from your face with both hands.
  6. To avoid scratched lenses, never place your sunglasses face down on a surface.
  7. Always store your sunglasses in their case for extra protection.
  8. Never wear your sunglasses on your head, this can cause the frame to stretch and lenses can become loose

Sunglass Buying Guide

Sunglasses and fashion spectacles can serve different purposes so it is important for you to consider the reason you need glasses before deciding what type will best suit your needs.

No matter the type you choose, in Australia, sunglasses are required to meet the standards set out by the Consumer Goods (Sunglasses and Fashion Spectacles) Safety Standard 2017 as well as be tested prior to sale. This Standard specifies a range of performance standards, including UV protection for all sunglasses and fashion spectacles available in Australia. The Standard defines five categories of lens, according to the amount of UV radiation and visible light that is able to pass through the lens. The Standard also specifies lens dimensions (width and height) and transmittance (visible light), detection of signals, optical quality, coverage (Category 4 only) safety requirements.

Categories of sunglasses and fashion spectacles according to the Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 1067.1:2016

Lens Category Description
Lens category 0: Light tint sunglasses or fashion spectacles These provide very limited reduction of sunglare and some UV protection.
Lens category 1: Light tint sunglasses or fashion spectacles These provide limited protection against sun glare and some UV protection; they are not suitable for driving in at night or under dull light conditions.
Lens category 2: General purpose sunglasses These provide good protection against sun glare and good UV protection; they are suitable for driving in at night or under dull light conditions.
Lens category 3: General purpose sunglasses These provide high protection against sun glare and good UV protection; they are not suitable for driving at night or under dull light conditions.
Lens category 4: Very dark special sunglasses – very high sun glare reduction These are special purpose sunglasses that provide a very high protection against extreme sun glare and good UV protection, they are not suitable for road use and driving.

How to choose the best sunglasses?

There are so many sunglasses to choose from which can make it overwhelming however your decision can be made easier by considering these four rules:

As we mentioned above, there are different lens categories so what you need the glasses for will determine the lens category needed. If you are wanting UV protection then we recommend looking for sunglasses with a minimum category 2 lens. These will be effective in reducing glare and provide a medium to high level of protection.

A general rule of thumb when choosing a sunglass shape is to go with the opposite of your face shape. If you have a round face look for square geometric shapes or if you have a more square face consider rounded or curvy frames. Heart-shaped faces are best suited to aviator or cat-eye style glasses and oval faces can opt from any of the above.

Make sure you don’t have to constantly push your glasses up the bridge of your nose by making sure the glasses you buy fit you well. Try on different styles to make sure that the bridge and the frame’s arm fits your face well.

Sunglasses can be a great investment so choosing a pair that is of good quality and versatile will mean that you get the most out of your money. Using the above rules as well as considering your current wardrobe to determine the right colour for you will allow you to wear your sunglasses with almost every outfit you have. We recommend a tortoiseshell or plain black to compliment most outfits.
